Cambodia’s Department of Accreditation conducts first assessor training

PHNOM PENH, 4 July 2016 – The Department of Accreditation of the Ministry of Industry and Handicraft of Cambodia conducted its first ISO / IEC 17025 assessor training on 27 June-2 July. This training aims to qualify assessors for testing and calibration laboratories and build up the pool of available assessors in the country.

Participants from Lao PDR and Myanmar also joined the course. All three countries are in the process of establishing their accreditation services which include building their assessor capacities to be in line with the ASEAN targets. Cambodia, Lao PDR and Myanmar (CLM) have been progressing step-by-step to fulfill the technical, administrative and political requirements needed to provide accreditation services nationally.   This is part of efforts currently undertaken under the coordination of ASEAN Consultative Committee on Standards and Quality (ACCSQ) Working Group on Conformity Assessment.

Two of the three countries cooperate with Partner Accreditation Bodies from other ASEAN countries to offer internationally recognized accreditation services to customers; the third will soon enter into an agreement with its Partner Accreditation Body to also be able to offer this new service. Offering internationally recognized accreditation services will allow the CLM countries to contribute to an improved, effective and efficient conformity assessment regime in the region as one of the measures proposed in the ASEAN Economic Community Blueprint 2025 to create a highly integrated and cohesive ASEAN economy.

The six-day training was conducted in cooperation with Cambodia’s Partner Accreditation Body from Thailand, the National Standardization Council of Thailand – Office of the National Standardization Council.

The training was supported by the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB), the National Metrology Institute of Germany under the scope of the ASEAN project “Strengthening Quality Infrastructure in ASEAN.” The project is implemented and monitored by ACCSQ.

As one of ASEAN’s key Development Partners, Germany is helping Member States tackle the challenge of narrowing the development gap in the region by providing support to the newer ASEAN Member States in line with the Initiative for ASEAN Integration.
